Travel to Kiev
Kiev, being the metropolis of Ukraine, has about 2.5 million inhabitants. It is placed on the Dnieper River, in the same time is a river port and an important commercial center. The presence of numerous ancient monuments is an evidence of its ancient greatness.
Kiev was founded between the 3th and 6th centuries, and, as well- known, was the first capital of Russia, having a key role in the past and culture of Ukraine and Russia.
It is the cradle of Russian civilization from ancient times until today Kiev is an important ecclesiastic center of the Orthodox Church. Some of its artistic attractions is the Imperial Palace, the Byzantine Cathedral of St. Sophia, the Church of Saint Andrea of Baroque style. It is also an important intellectual core of the nation, rich in libraries and universities.
The antique district of Kiev is mainly converging in the north-eastern side of the street of Vladimirjvsky and here are visible the numerous monuments, the most substantial of which is the sanctuary of St. Sophia of 11th centenary, with the huge assemblage of mosaics and murals.
The most enchanting street of Kiev is considered the Andrew’s Descent, winding toward to the historical region of merchants Podol.
Another of the highly attractive places is the street Khreshchatyk, going from the center and down to the river port, full of bars, cafes, shops and old houses preserved in excellent state. In the southern part of Downtown is bustling and full of life Bessarabian market of fruits and vegetables.
Then you can visit the Museum of Chernobyl, dedicated to the famous and sad accident of nuclear disaster that occurred in the 80th only 100 km from Kiev.
In the vicinity of old city is the Pechersky Monastery, founded in 1051 and disposed in a picturesque location on the wooded slopes. It consists of a complex of numerous temples with gilded domes and in the underground labyrinths which stored the mummified remains of monks.
Cathedral of the Assumption, being a part of the convent complex, also refers to the 11th century, and despite the fact that was partially destructed during the World War II, yet is a magnificent example of Baroque church buildings in the country.
You can also visit the historical museum where presented the works of handicraft made of precious stones and metals. The most estimable exhibit is a Scythian gold of the fourth century BC.
When traveling in Kiev is also interesting to visit the museum of folk architecture, just 12 km from the center, encircled by the scenic landscapes of the hills. There are several buildings, churches, farms and windmills of XVII and XX centuries and well-kept gardens. The museum contains seven small villages that are typical and traditional for the different regions.
Additionally, there are good restaurants and a gift shops.
